Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2015 announced

The Nobel Prize 2015 in Physiology or Medicine jointly went to William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura, and Youyou Tu.

Mr. Campbell and Mr. Omura won it for “their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites”, while Ms. Tu won it for “her discoveries concerning a novel therapy for malaria.”

Mr. Campbell and Mr. Ōmura discovered a new drug, Avermectin, the derivatives of which have radically lowered the incidence of River Blindness and Lymphatic Filariasis, said a press relase. “The drug also showed efficacy against an expanding number of other parasitic diseases,” it added.

Professor Deaton described himself as “someone who’s concerned with the poor of the world and how people behave, and what gives them a good life”.

His research focuses on health, wellbeing, and economic development.

Torsten Persson, secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences award committee, said that Professor Deaton’s work has had “enormous influence”, particularly in India where the government had reshaped its measurement of poverty.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2015

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Tunisia’s National Dialogue Quartet for helping the country’s transition to democracy.

The Nobel committee said the group of civil society organisations had made a “decisive contribution” to democracy after the 2011 revolution.

It said the quartet helped establish a political process when the country “was on the brink of civil war”.

The Nobel Prize 2015 in Physics jointly went to Takaaki Kajita from the University of Tokyo and Arthur B. McDonald from Queen’s University, Canada.

The Nobel was awarded “for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass”.
