Are you in pain? This is the question Gurmeet Singh usually asks when he enters a hospital ward in the city of Patna. The ward is a damp and dingy facility. Half a dozen beds for sick patients are scattered all over the dimly-lit place. When he enters the hospital, the faces of weary, lawaaris (as they are called) patients light up and they smile. For more than 20 years now, Gurmeet Singh visits the abandoned sick at the Patna Medical College and Hospital with medicines and food.

Gurmeet has been continuously serving these patients without a break. According to India Times, in the morning, Gurmeet works at his family-owned clothes shop and by night, he is a messiah for the destitute. His brothers help him by donating 10% of their monthly earnings for the treatment of the poor. The food he serves to the patients is delicious-hot piping dal, rice, curd, eggs and vegetables.

An incident that occurred two decades ago compelled Gurmeet to take up this cause. A woman selling plastic bags turned up at his shop carrying a badly scalded boy in her arms. Gurmeet took him to the hospital but was shocked to find out that the doctors were on strike. He saw that due to the strike, the poor and the disabled were badly affected. It was then that he decided to roll up his sleeves and work for the betterment of the patients.

Today, authorities send him letters of admiration and praise him for his work. Gurmeet, however, doesn’t like to boast about his work. He prefers to quietly appear like an angel, feed people and put a blanket over them as they sleep peacefully.
