Modi Announces Father-Daughter Selfie Campaign For The Girl Child

Addressing the nation over the radio on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide social media campaign for fathers and daughters to take selfies together, and post them on Twitter with the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter.

Modi promised to retweet the Twitter messages with the best tag line as part of his ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save your Daughter, Teach your Daughter) campaign to save the Girl Child in India.

Speaking on the ninth edition of “Mann Ki Baat,” the radio program in which Modi shares his thoughts with the nation, the prime minister expressed his concern about the declining sex ratio in several districts of India.

He urged the people to join the ‘Selfie With Daughter’ initiative, saying it will give a new hope to combat the plummeting sex ratio in some parts of the country.

“In Haryana, a village Sarpanch initiated a #SelfieWithDaughter initiative. I urge all of you, share a #SelfieWithDaughter. Also share a tagline that will encourage ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’,” Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the nation in the ninth edition of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme.

In ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister shares his thoughts with the nation. The programme aims to deliver the Prime Minister’s voice to the general masses of the country since television connection is still not available everywhere, especially in the rural regions of remote locations.

Indians Flood the Internet With #SelfieWithDaughter Photos

India’s Prime Minister has led the campaign to boost the standing of women in India’s highly patriarchal society

Thousands of people across India (and several from various corners of the globe) flooded social media Sunday with selfies taken with their daughters in response to a call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi appealed to his country during his monthly radio address to share photos with the tag #SelfieWithDaughter — an attempt to recognize and celebrate the girl child as part of his Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign.

Gender inequality has long been a major problem in India’s highly patriarchal society, where female children are being perceived as inferior and even killed in the womb or as infants — a phenomenon Modi has fought to reverse since he took office about a year ago.The first edition of the programme was aired on October 3, 2014.
